Cairo Condominium

The Cairo is a condominium that has Moorish and Romanesque Revival architectural styling. It has gargoyles sitting high above the front entrance, with winged griffins staring down from cornices, along with elephants supporting the front windows, and 4th floor dragon and dwarf crosses. It is the District of Columbia’s tallest residential building and was completed in 1894 as the city’s first residential skyscraper. The height of The Cairo was controversial at the time of completion and led to building height regulations that continue today. The rooftop deck provides a view including Catholic University, the National Cathedral, Georgetown, the Washington Monument, and the Capitol Building. The U-shaped building surrounds a Zen stone garden courtyard. Quite a bit of history can be found on the building here.
